If you are planning to take a break in the foothills of the Himalayas and have decided to follow tiger trails and do some serious birding, the right place to visit is Corbett National Park.


In the year 1936 Corbett National Park was declared a sanctuary for tigers and other fauna. It was established by the then legendry hunter and conservationist Sir Edward James Corbett. Situated in the foothills of Himalayas, Corbett Park is one of the main attractions near Nainital, a district of Uttarakhand in India. The Park spreads over 1318.54 sq km. The topography of hills, grasslands, rich flora and fauna, Ramganga and Kosi rivers add to the beauty of the park and its rich eco system. Corbett National Park is home to the Royal Bengal Tiger and many other species of birds, reptiles, mammals and plants.

Corbett National Park is an ideal place for adventure and nature lovers. Mahseer fishing, trekking, camping, safaris, bird watching, elephant rides are some of the activities one can enjoy here. The old forest trek trails starts from Corbett National Park and go up to Nainital and Pangot. There are ample camp sites in and around Corbett National Park. Yoga and meditation camps are also organized for the tourists. One can reach here easily by rail or road from Delhi, Dehradun, Lucknow etc. The best time to visit the Park is from mid-October to mid-June as one can explore all the zones of the Reserve. In the monsoon, a large part of the National Park is closed for tourists.

The park has a good Tiger population. It was here that the ‘Project Tiger’ was launched in 1973 with an aim to conserve this endangered species and protect their habitat.  Being a carnivore and a master predator, the tiger lies on top of the food chain. The Tiger is an indicator of a healthy wilderness ecosystem. India is home to 1706 number of tigers, which is more than half of the world tiger population Other animals which add to the Park’s attraction are Asian Elephant, Leopard, Jungle cat, Fishing cat, Himalayan black bear and Sloth bear, Yellow-throated marten, Porcupine, Sambhar & Chital, Barking & Hog deer etc. Some of the birds commonly seen here are Osprey, Crested serpent eagle, Black winged kite, Shikra, Pallas' fishing eagle, Spotted eagle, Minivets, Shrikes, Babblers etc.
